It all started in July 22 1982 No dress code, no pretense, fair-priced drinks, and 100% underground music on great sound that has been updated to a world-famous Funktion-One system. This place is not just a club, it is an institution. It is downstairs from Wrigleyville’s venerable music venue Metro. The true of the matter is very simple you cannot find another Club in Chicago where you can feel as comfortable not matter what you wear, jeans and a t-shirt or a suit and tie; you will fit in either way.
Smart Bar nightly lineup includes cutting-edge Goth, underground hip-hop, techno house and more. We do not go to just listen and dance to music; we go there to discover it, to learn about it. Some of our favorite memories from shows have come down in “the basement.” This is the average person’s House mecca, providing a soundtrack that EDM nerds can get excited about, yet have created an environment that caters to the casual listener of Techno as well. Simply put, we love this place; it is the best of both worlds.
The Building at 3730 North Clark Street, was originally built in 1927 as a Swedish Community Center, the building was a jazz/folk club called Stages Music Hall. Smart Bar opened on the top floor and then move to the Lower level of the building when the live music venue Metro opened in the main floor, developing a symbiotic relationship hosting after party shows allowing a space for rock and dance fans to mix and explore each other’s music. Let us do not forget that Chicago is the Cradle of House Music, with 33 years of experience it is hard to find a venue that is as consistent and forward thinking with their bookings as Smart Bar.
